Google Apps for Education Migration Under Way! - Going Google!
We have followed many blog posts, viewed webinars, asked questions, read documentation and have decided to lead our region in converting to cloud-based email and groupware solution.
We have officially announced to our staff and administration that we are preparing for a summer migration to Google Apps for Education to replace our existing messaging and groupware solution.
To date we have:
- Set up two Google Apps for Education domains. One for staff and one for students.
- Registered a new, shorter domain name for shorter, easier email addresses. (may as well complicate the migration by changing everyone's email address. If I have to take two shots, give them to me all at once.)
- Transitioned our Technology Services team to the new system for testing and familiarity.
- Begin working with Directory Sync to tie user accounts into the Active Directory system for user account management and account deployment.
- Enacted a communications plan including our Technology Services blog, NASDtech wiki, email announcements to all staff, several administrative meeting announcements, and more.
- Set up the support site template and started customization. We'll use this in the transition and hopefully as part of the training plan.
- Established a Diigo list to share Google Apps bookmarks, articles, and resources.
- Researching our archiving solution.
- Monitoring the impact that hosted email might have on our bandwidth
There are many tasks being done and so many more to do. I hope to outline our journey here.
We have hit our first snag. Apparently Google Apps Directory Sync does not sync password changes from Active Directory. We may need a 3rd party to assist with the APIs.
Please check back frequently to follow our journey to the clouds!

Kurt,
Check into a single sign-on solution for doing authentication into Google Apps. We are using CAS, it is an open source product originally developed at Yale and it works perfectly. Then you don't have to worry about password issues in Google.
Step-by-step how-to's on setting it up can be found on my blog if you are interested: blog.krishagel.com
I am also happy to help if you need any help with this or anything else related to Google Apps.
Kris,
All I can say is... WOW! Looks like CAS is just what the doctor ordered.
We've seen some service providers who offer this type of service. I had no idea there was an open source solution.
Your documentation looks AWESOME! I've shared your blog posts about CAS with my network administrators. It may be a bit beyond our skill set at least initially.
I'm now subscribed to your blog and following you on Twitter! Thank you so much for contributing back to the community!

Kurt,
This is ambitious. Let us know if the IU can help with the transition.
Hi Kelly!
We're really taking a risk. I think the risk has the potential for great reward.
Right now email is not a problem. So many will ask... Kurt, what are you fixing????
As you know an internal email system is always more responsive than a web-based system. So I'm nervous about the change but anxious and excited about the potential.
Would love to have IU20 in our corner!
I'm also thankful for folks like Kris (the commenter above) who've gone before us and helped pave the way.
Thanks for offering.
KP
Kurt,
I will talk to Tom and get back to you. Maybe we can add this to our discussion on the 20th? Happy Holidays:)
Kelly
