Mathematics - Optical Illusions

As a former math teacher I liked using optical illusions. Students found them fascinating and I was able to effectively use them to teach several principles.
The site is called 72 Optical Illusions and Visual Phenomena

One of my favorites was the missing corner cube. You have to change your focal point to see the missing corner cube as an EXTERNAL object. Some students will get it right away, some will take a while, some will struggle. It makes for nice group work as students who see it try to coach and verbalize what one must do to see the alternative view.

I know many of our CFF coaches look for good math activities. Many of the illusions are interactive and quite engaging. I would definitely recommend this site. Do have java enabled in your browser.

Enjoy!

Beginning School Year Activity idea

I once had a teacher who asked us to write a letter to ourselves... in 5 years. We were asked to outline our goals, dreams, occupation, etc. She would date them, put them in a shoebox and, you guessed it, mail them 5 years later.

Here's the 21st century version of that activity.... use l8r

This web service allows you to send an email message up to 5 years down the road.
Here's a snip from their site:

l8r lets you send email later.

  • prepare up to five year's worth of happy birthday emails
  • remind your friends one day before the Bloomingdale sale
  • remind yourself to buy flowers on your wedding anniversary
  • impress your boss by "sending" email at 11PM (and showing up at 8AM next day!)

I've not tried it, but it sounds fun!

Link Help Needed

I've created a new ning for my kids' youth athletic association. I'd like to help other families find it using Google . I'd like to ask my network to link to this new social network to help elevate the page rank on the Google.

Here it is and please help me if you can by linking to it! Thanks network!
